Watch and weep, people. The brand-new extended trailer for the film adaptation of JoJo Moyes’ bestselling book, Me Before You, dropped on Monday, March 28, and as expected, it is devastating.
The clip opens with high-powered financier Will Traynor (played by Sam Claflin) striking a deal on a dreary, rainy day in London. Will, clearly frantic to secure a big deal, steps outside in the pouring rain in his suit — and unfortunately runs into a busy intersection without looking. Of course, it’s in that very moment that he’s paralyzed.
Fast-forward and in steps Louisa Clark: a quirky twentysomething played by Game of Thrones‘ star Emilia Clarke, who cannot hold any of her odd jobs. Although she has zero relevant experience, she lands a gig as caretaker to wheelchair-bound Will, whose sharp mind and sarcastic personality luckily remain intact.
“Ugh, he hates me! Every time he looks at me, he looks at me like I’m stupid,” she gripes initially. However, the two bond and eventually fall in love.
“You’ve only got one life. It’s actually your duty to live it as fully as possible,” Traynor tells Louisa in another scene. Meanwhile, Louisa remains in a long-term relationship with her ignorant athlete boyfriend, Patrick (played by Harry Potter actor Matthew Lewis). During one particularly awkward family dinner, Patrick tells Will that he can overcome his paralysis with exercise and will.
“I thought i could crack this and go back as if nothing had changed,” Will responds. “I was wrong.”
Ultimately, Louisa is tasked with talking Will out of committing assisted suicide within six months time — and falls totally in love with him. The rest of the trailer is, well … just watch and make sure you’ve got some tissues handy.
